Young People's Network

The Young People's Network is a virtual network in that those who contribute to it may not be aware of it.

The Network was established as the overarching name for the wide range of groups and individuals that participate in consultation, training, and personal and social development opportunities. The aim is to coordinate and share the information that is being gathered from young people. To do this organisations are encouraged to use the Network as a way of involving young people or to share what they are doing with us so that we do not duplicate work.

The Young People's Development Workers (YPDW) are the local face of the Network. Whenever a Development Worker establishes a relationship with a group of young people or engages them in an activity they are contributing to the Network (even though they might not know it). Please click on the tab to the left to meet the YPDWs.

The Network was originally set up to target the 13-19 year old range but as there is a move to establish Children's Trusts the age range is broadening to include younger children. The work of the Young People's Development is coordinated by a steering group made up of people from various organisations including the Youth Service, voluntary sector, Social Services, Children's Fund and Connexions.

The Network aims to involve young people in planning, managing and evaluating services that are provided on their behalf.

Because it realises that young people can take responsibility for their own needs and know what they want, it offers them the chance to gain the knowledge and skills required to make decisions and effect change.

We try to encourage young people to share their experiences and become involved in the issues that affect their own and other people's lives. To do this we provide training and development opportunities, organise events and activity days and share information on what is happening in local areas.

We aim to give young people a voice and really value their opinions. The main objective is to consider and utilise these views and to influence organisations so that young people across York and North Yorkshire receive good quality services.
